November was a crazy month for us. David and I went on a cruise to the western Caribbean, and had a blast! We honestly didn't take a single picture, but I promise we went. In the meantime, my mom and sis-in-law Amanda came up to stay with the kids. Amanda put together this great collage of their happenings together.

August/September 2011

We spent most of August playing. We went to the park LOTS and to the pool a few times. Glen and Dean also are starting to play together more and more each day... and apparently spend a lot of time together standing at the kitchen counter. :)

The weather was still pretty fantastic in September, so we tried to play outside as much as we could.

In July, we headed to Vancouver, WA to visit my sister Mindy for the week of the Fourth. My oldest sister Bekky and my little brother Timmy were also in town, along with my parents who caravaned with us (this was our first major road trip as a family, and it went surprisingly well). It was a packed house, but we had fun--we went of lots of walks, ate good food, and lit some crazy fireworks.

While in Vancouver, we had a picnic in the park one day and listened to live music while the kids played in the water.

David and I also got a new calling in July to be the Wolf den leaders in Cub Scouts. This was our first meeting, and it was a crazy pizza party. Turns out, our unfinished basement is the perfect place for scouts!

Glen starts his first day of preschool with Miss Chris at Smart Start Preschool. The first week or two were a little rough, but ever since then it's been smooth sailing. We all LOVE Miss Chris!

Glen also turns three! He got lots of new movies, a backpack, a cars snuggie, and lots of fun toys.

After the family party, we had a party with friends at Chuck E. Cheese. About 20 mins before the party started, Glen got anxious to taste his cake and pulled it off the counter onto the ground. I kept my cool and told him to start eating it--it was his birthday cake. I then bought another cake for everyone else to eat.

And, my parents came for a visit during the second half of the month. We put my dad to work and finished a ton of projects around the house. My favorite was adding cupboards to my laundry room.

The Marathon

I don't even know where to start this post. I'm exhausted, still. Mentally, physically, emotionally. Marathons are draining, in so SO many ways.

I've run 667 miles since January 1. That probably has something to do with the fatigue I feel now. But I'm really proud of that number. That's just about the distance from my home here in Provo to the house I grew up in Lake Isabella. C-A-L-I-F-O-R-N-I-A. That's a long way. So I'm REALLY proud of that number. It represents a lot of sweat, blisters, and hard work.

I knew I wanted to run Ogden again right after I finished it two years ago. The 2009 marathon was great for me--I ran strong the whole race and met my stretch goal, 4:09. I honestly never thought that was possible. So, I was excited to try it again and do even better. Since I'm on a two year life plan I rotate between having a baby one summer and running a marathon the next. Ogden 2011 was on my calendar for TWO YEARS. And for the last 5 months it's just about all I ate, slept, talked, planned, hoped and thought about.

I trained hard and smart, and got faster. I lost weight. I improved my running form. I listened to my body. I felt really confident going into this race. Mentally, I was at a new place--no nerves or anxiety. I got really sick the week of the race (a killer sinus infection and head cold), but I just kept telling myself that I can run sick. I'd done it before in training, and I could do it on race day. The weather was really bad the whole week before the race, raining every single day that week (and even a little sprinkling the morning of the race). But I told myself that I had run lots more miles in snow and wind and hail, and that I could run in rain. All my training (and not just the miles) really made me more confident. I also adopted a new mantra: IT IS WHAT IT IS! Just accept the circumstances and deal with it. I said it A LOT during race week, and it really helped me focus on what I could control and let go of the things I couldn't. And as it turns out, race day was beautiful and sunny and my cold was much better when I woke up. I CAN DO THIS, I told myself!

Twelve years ago a friend of mine in the dorms (Becka) ran the St George Marathon. I remember telling my dad about it and he was asking about her time. I don't remember it for the life of me, but what I do remember is my dad mentioning that anyone finishing in less than four hours was a serious runner. It meant nothing to me at the time because I had never even considered running one at that point. But for some reason, it has stuck with me ALL THESE YEARS, and I was finally in a position to become a "serious runner" (according to my dad's standards). **Disclaimer: I seriously think that anyone who finishes a marathon is a serious runner, regardless of your finish time!** So this is what I was shooting for:

Minimum Goal: Under 4 hours

Target Goal: 3:52

Stretch Goal: 3:45

I signed up to run with the 3:45 finish pace group. I knew I could run a 8:45 min/mile pace from my long runs, so I thought that on race day I could stretch to hold a 8:35 pace. I was excited to have someone else be responsible for not going out too fast and keeping me motivated at the end. But the pacer was busy talking to everyone, and we did go out too fast. I kept checking my watch, and we were always faster than we should have been. I felt good and strong with the pace group, and made it up the one tough hill at mile 14. But by mile 16 I was starting to struggle and fell back from the pace group. I started feeling tired. I had blisters on my toes (a constant battle for me this year!). I had lots of phrases to tell myself to help me through this part: 'This fatigue is fleeting.' 'I'm ready. I'm prepared. I've run 609 miles.' 'Gliding strong with effort.' But despite all of that, I couldn't get my mind to focus on my goal. So I did what I've never done in a marathon--I stopped and walked for a minute.

I've never walked a step in a marathon (except at an aid station or the porta potty), so walking for me was a big personal let down. I don't walk in training runs. I don't walk. It's not my thing. And it made me really sad. I seriously considered right then and there about quitting and not finishing the race at all. I was down and frustrated. And then a girl ran by me, saw me walking, and asked me if I wanted to run with her. I couldn't talk and I think she must have seen the disappointment on my face, because she slowed down and took her headphones out of her ears to talk to me. She said that I was really tough and that I could finish the race. So with that, I said thank you and started to run again. And I knew I was crazy to even consider quitting.

The last eight miles were tough. I was finally to the nice downhill portion of the race, but there was a pretty strong headwind down the canyon. My blisters were killing me and I started to get a side ache. So I alternated running and walking for the last eight miles. I had started my watch a mile late, so I didn't know my exact time, but from my estimate I could see my target goal slipping away from me. At around mile 25 someone was standing along the trail with a sign that said, "You can do hard things!" It's kind of a theme of a good friend of mine and it gave me just enough push to finish. I crossed the finish line in 3:55:51!

I was really pretty frustrated with my race. I was mad at myself for walking, mad at myself for not meeting all of my goals, mad for not being as mentally tough as I thought I could be. I didn't want to run another marathon again. I didn't care about my recovery. I didn't stretch like I should, I didn't eat, I didn't ice. I didn't do any of the things I knew I needed to help my body feel better. I was fed up with running and everything relating to it. And I had a TERRIBLE recovery. My legs have never been so sore. I have never felt so tired. I had a dark, sad few days.

But here I am, a week or so out, and I'm feeling a lot better mentally and physically! I've had some time to think and talk things over, and here are some new insights...

How is it even possible to finish a marathon and feel bummed about it? I'm not an elite runner, this isn't my profession, so I really REALLY should be happy if I can just cross that finish line. Really. I need to remember that. It's good to have goals, but when we're talking about 26.2 miles, it seriously is all about finishing.

The crazy thing is that, even with all the walking I did, I was still running a good pace while I was running. And I still shaved off 14 minutes from my last finish time. I walked, A LOT, and still got a PR... by a long shot. That IS something to be proud of!

I want to be like that girl--the one who took out her earphones. In a race AND in life. Be willing to forget yourself and encourage others who are struggling. Not to mention the fact that I'm surrounded with people like that everyday--especially the friends and family that drove all the way to Ogden just to see me cross the finish line. David, Kathy, Amy and Michelle you are THE BEST!!

Ogden 2013, you better get ready for ME!

P.S. I have lots more things to say about the race--like my beautiful sister coming to UT to run it with me, and my awesome, injured training buddy Amy. I'll have to save those for another post since this one is already WAY to long!

December 2010

This was a busy month for us. We moved into our new house the day after Thanksgiving, so we were still living out of boxes this month, trying to prepare the holidays. Mark got married, we had a big Schultz Christmas dinner, then headed home to CA to spend Christmas with my family.

Still getting settled in in January (I might use this excuse for a year or two!). Mommy starts a weight loss competition and marathon training. Daddy starts working on a fun project at work (4 in 4 promo). Glen starts funny prayers... "Thank you for Letter Factory. Thank you for 'W.' Thank you for 'wuh, wuh, wuh.'" We learn that Dean hates pureed food and only wants table food. Dean now crawls on hands and knees and is pulling up on everything (and falling down a lot).

Mommy turns 30 and wins her weight-loss competition by losing 25.2 pounds in 12 weeks! Daddy's work takes us night tubing at Soldier's Hollow--SO FUN!!! Krissy and Elle and Kent come for a great visit. Glen starts potty-training. Dean starts waving (sometimes).

Glen starts eating PB&J (thankfully!) due to the influence of Kent and Elle.

When we first moved into the house, I was walking down the stairs with Glen. He said, "Hear dat mama?" I said, "Yes, it's the stairs creaking." Glen says, "No mama, stairs have gas!")

This is Glen's first reward for going #2 on the potty. Way to go big boy!!

April 2011

April 2 was 70 degrees, and then we woke up to 2+ inches of snow on April 3--CRAZY! Mommy has logged more than 400 running miles by now. Daddy gets a speeding ticket. :) Glen continues to potty-train (like a champion!) and Dean is getting close to walking.

Glen turned two on Saturday. Two years!!! Wow, that went fast! He started off the day with his dad. David took him on our ward's annual Fathers and Sons Campout. David said he had fun walking around, sitting in a little chair, and holding his skewer in the fire. They went to bed late and woke up early with the sun, but he slept pretty well for his first time in a sleeping bag and a tent.

The rest of the day was pretty relaxed at home--with a long nap in the afternoon to try to recover some of the missing sleep from the night before! He got a sweet car track from his friend Gavin, so he was happy to stay at home and play.

We did most of our celebrating on Sunday. We had dinner at Grandpa Schultz's house and opened presents. He mostly got cars--LOTS of cars. And he loved them all. In fact, he cried through his whole bath because he couldn't play with them in the water. No worries, he went to bed with new cars in hand. :)

Glen is such an active boy! He literally runs from one end of the house to the other, crashing into the wall and smashing anything in his path. He's ALL boy! They call him Demolition Glen in nursery. :) He is full of attitude and is all about pushing the limits these days--especially when it comes to Dean. Sometimes it's hard for his sleep-deprived mom to have the patience to handle all his energy! Thank goodness for grandparents!!

Glen is talking like crazy these days. He repeats just about everything. We're working on letters, and he knows a good handful (by sight and the sound they make). He's really good with colors (yellow is his favorite) and decent with counting--he has 1, 2, 3, 4 and 8, 9, 10 down but the middle numbers get a little jumbled. His favorite show is Chuggington and his favorite movie is Cars. He's sleeping really well in his bed and still takes a 2-hour nap in the afternoon. He loves olives, noodle soup, Swedish fish and any kind of dip. And he still loves cars! :)

He's been quiet and mellow, just like his big brother was. Delivery was a quick, succesful VBAC. We're all doing well and are looking forward to getting home.
Glen is currently uninterested in his new brother. :)

Cars

Glen loves cars. LOVES them. When he goes to bed at night, it's with two cars. He rarely wakes up in the middle of the night, but when he does he asks for cars. When he wakes up in the morning, the first thing he says is "cars" and he speeds off to find there he left them the night before. He'll look out the window at home and point out every car he sees parked on the street or that drives by. We'll drive down the street and he'll say "cars" a hundred times before we reach our destination. Seriously.

Sure he's playing with his trains, but look at what's lined-up neatly next to the track. :)

At first, anything with wheels was a "car" -- trucks, motorcycles, bikes, my rollerblades. Now he can distinguish a motorcycle (mow kigh-ko) and a tractor (tack-tow). But most everything else is still just a "car." The funny thing is that he can tell the difference between types of cars. Starting a few months ago, if he sees a silver jetta, he'll say "dada" (which is what David drives). If he sees an Audi A6, he'll say "Gaga" -- our friend Gavin has a white A6. He won't say it if he sees any model of Audi though, just an A6. It's pretty amazing.

He'll share most of his toys, but not his cars. He carries them around all day. At first we bought him 10 regular matchbox cars for Christmas. He could easily carry four of five. Now we've upgraded to construction vehicles (bulldozer, cement mixer, dump truck, etc.), which are quite a bit bulkier. It took a day or two, but he's mastered the balancing act and can successfully carry five of those at a time too... and sometimes more. Good thing for big hands!

I think I count seven cars--and these are the bulky construction ones--in one hand!

I love this baby boy--who doesn't look or sound much like a baby these days. Pretty soon there will be another baby boy, so I'm just trying to enjoy our last days together when it's just the two of us... and a whole lot of cars! :)

A New Outing

How we met...

David's family has started a family history blog. It's a way to for everyone to contribute and preserve some great family memories. This week's question was about how everyone met their spouse. David and I both wrote our own versions, and I thought that I might as well post them here as well since the hard work was done. Enjoy...

David's Perspective

I think it was September of 2004 when I got a random phone call from my sister Sherry, who I talk to only on the phone maybe once a year. I was like, I wonder why Sherry is calling. She started with a question of “Are you dating anyone?” My answer was “Yes, I’m dating lots of people.” And I was. I was in my prime dating scene, at least 2 per week. I then asked why she wanted to know my dating life and she said “I have someone for you to go out with.” I immediately thought to myself, how would my sister who I barely talk to know a girl that I would want to go out with. So I said, “Well, tell me about this girl, why would I like her?” She said, “I don’t really know, I’ve never met her.” After that comment I just sat there like…. Uhhhh what? She then said that she was neighbors with her sister and that her sister was cute and fun. I just thought to myself, oh brother. Here I am a full dating machine meeting new girls like crazy and I’m supposed to go out with a girl that has to have her sisters neighbor set her up?

Well, I didn’t call Kami, but after about 3 weeks of Sherry nagging me to call I finally gave in just to get Sherry off my back. So I called Kami and no answer, well no there was no way I was going to leave a message. “Hi, I’m David and my sister who knows your sister told me to call… so you want to go out?” Yeah right. After another week or so I called back and talked with Kami and introduced myself and asked if I could take her out. She said yes and I asked what some of her interests were and she told me about Color Me Mine, a place to go make and paint pottery. Here I was again thinking… oh great some artsy girl, I don’t want to do that. So I said I knew the place and said I’ll set something up. We set up a time and she gave me her address.

The first date.
It was a week before Halloween and on the way over to pick up Kami I was just about there when I realized that I had forgotten my wallet at my apartment. In the hundreds of dates I had ever been on and still to this day I have only forgotten my wallet once, and it was my first date with Kami. I knocked on the door and a girl opened the door and immediately the first thought that went through my head was, “Please don’t be the roommate, please don’t be the roommate.” This girl was smoking hot. She was in this red shirt with white stripes down the shoulders and sleeves, it was very attractive. I introduced myself and she introduced herself as Kami and I was like YES! It wasn’t the roommate. So we got in the car and I admitted to her that I had forgotten my wallet for the first time ever on a date. So we headed back to my place and made out the rest of the night… JUST KIDDING! We got my wallet and headed to dinner at Red Robin, little did I know that I had onion breath the rest of the night from my tasty burger. Sorry Kami! My plan was to go ice skating with her after dinner, and if the night was going well to either hit movie or if I was having a blast to go hit a haunted house because then she’d have to hang on to me for being scared, I loved haunted houses for dating for that reason. So we went ice skating and then headed up to Salt Lake to go to a haunted house. The conversation was great the whole night was wonderful. And unlike the rest of you we did not kiss on the first date. In fact it took until December to kiss. And after we kissed I don’t think I dated anyone else really, I think maybe a couple of dates here or there. We got married a year later in December 2005.

Kami's Perspective

David and I met in October 2004. I had just broken off a relationship with someone else, and my sister Mindy asked me if she could set me up with someone. She had this friend Sherry who was really cute, and Sherry had a brother in my area. All she knew about him was that he was a computer science major, he played volleyball, and he came from a big family. I agreed, thinking that this guy must be a total nerd if his sister was setting him up from two states away. I was dating A LOT at the time (three different David’s at one time actually), but I figured one date wouldn’t hurt and it would make my sister happy…

Apparently David had tried my home phone a few times, but I never answered it and he wouldn’t leave a message. So Mindy gave him my work number, and he finally got a hold of me there. I had him call me back on my cell that night. I was at the hospital with my friend and her grandma, but I went into the waiting room to coordinate details of the date for that Saturday night.

I didn’t really give the date much thought after that. I had ZERO expectations. When David picked me up, he was a little late. He had gone to the house next door by accident, but they pointed him in the right direction. My first impression was that he was a bit of a geek: old white tennis shoes, t-shirt, jeans. But he was nice and outgoing and had a cute smile. Then we walked to his car, and I was very impressed. J (Side note: I wrote my version before I read David’s. And, I actually wore a solid black ¾ length sleeved shirt with a white camisole underneath, and grey jeans and black boots. I do know the red shirt that he was referring to, which I wore on later dates, but not that one. But nice try David!)

Then he admitted that we would have to go back to his apartment because he had left his wallet at home. He kept saying that he never does that (and looking back now I can appreciate how rare that really is), but I wasn’t bothered—I thought it was pretty funny. I met a few of his roommates and got to see where he lived. Then, he had me choose where to eat dinner, but he gave me three options: Red Robin, Hacientos, or some Italian restaurant (I can’t remember—Macaroni Grill?). I LOVED that—total bonus points. I picked Red Robin.

We had a bit of a wait, so we sat on a bench in the mall and talked. He told me how he just got a cell phone for the first time because the bishop in his ward made him get one for his calling (executive secretary). After dinner, he had me choose the activity—haunted house or ice skating. I picked the haunted house because it was something seasonal, but then he drove to the ice skating rink anyway and said we could do both. Fortunately I had taken an ice skating class at BYU, so I was pretty comfortable on the ice. I was also pretty impressed with David—he said he used to play hockey. We skated around, and I told him all about my upcoming Europe backpacking trip the next year and he told me about his accident and how bad his leg got hurt. It was funny to me because all these stories of stuff he did weren’t really adding up to the big geek I originally thought he was.

After skating, we drove up to SLC and went to a haunted house. I remember commenting to David how comfortable he looked in his car—the seat was as far back as it could go, and he had cruise control on so his legs were totally stretched out. When we pulled into the parking lot, someone directing traffic stopped David and told him he had a sweet car. It was awesome. It had been raining all night and the line to get in was out the door, but David walked us straight up the VIP line and paid extra to get us inside right away. Very smooth! The haunted house was really fun. The funny thing was that he kept holding my hand or putting his arm around me, like I was scared. I figured he was just using it as an excuse to touch me.

On the way home we talked pretty easily, but I was seriously tired and fighting sleep (he didn’t know that though). It had been a long night and a long date for that matter. I had had fun, but I’m not a night owl. He dropped me off at home and walked me to the door. We probably hugged or something—I actually can’t remember. But after I got to my room, I sent him a text thanking him for the date and saying I had a good time. Apparently, that sealed the deal for David.

We talked and texted a bit after that. He invited me to play volleyball with his friends a few days later, and we went out the next weekend (Halloween) and the next and the next. I spent Thanksgiving dinner with the Schultz family, and he held my hand that weekend for the first time. Then he kissed me a few weeks later, in December. I liked him, but I was still dating other guys as well. It wasn’t until just before I left for home over Christmas that I decided to buckle down and commit. We were skiing and I told him that I was going to be his girlfriend and just date him, or something along those lines. Anyhow, ever since that day I was hooked. We dated for almost a year when he proposed, and got married the following December.

There you have it. Blind dates DO work out sometimes! I'm just glad that ours did!!

A recap, in pictures, of life the last few months...

Trying new foods. Glen was a HORRIBLE eater for a few months, back around the time David and I went on our cruise (sorry Mindy and Michelle!). But he's doing much better now a has added quite a few new options to his diet...

Quite honestly, this is one of MY favorite treats, so why not share the love with Glen?! David does not love it. :)

Mmmm. Grilled cheese. One of daddy's favorites!

One morning, when I was feeling especially patient, I decided to be a good mom and let Glen feed himself. I wouldn't do it again with lucky charms because those little marshmallows can make a MESS! We had to take a bath and do a complete wardrobe change, but Glen LOVED it!

And when all else fails (usually on sick days) this is a last resort: a fruit smoothie. At least he's getting some fruit and fluids. And I get one too. :)

In case anyone had any doubts that David was Glen's father...

A new trick! He learned this one about a month ago: crossing his fingers. One night he ran into the kitchen yelling mama! He held up his little chubby hand and was SO proud that he had crossed his fingers! At first it was just his left hand, but now he can do the double cross. Cute boy! :)

David got his eyes dilated a few weeks ago at the eye doctor, and had to wear these sweet shades home. Glen loved them for about a day or two...

Mom's shower cap and a sippy cup of milk. Makes for a good morning. (Side note: Notice his huge thighs already. To date, it's about the only thing he's inherited from me.)

His new favorite toy. He can turn it on, unlock it, scroll through pages, pick a game and play it. It's really pretty incredible.

He really likes being pushed in his shopping cart. He'll climb in, look at us, and say "go!" Thankfully daddy usually complies, since my pregnant belly doesn't lend itself to leaning over and running very well these days!

And we actually made it outside the last few days of February! It warmed up (to the 50's) for a few days, so we took to the backyard with slide ("wide") and lawnmower ("mon mower")...

Then March rolled around and the snow came too. So sad! We're looking forward to more sunny days outside, very soon!!

Here's a little of what we've been up to the past month or two...

David turned 30!

We had lots of fun visitors! My mom and niece Taryn stayed for about 3 weeks. They overlapped a few days with my older sister Mindy and her two daughters, Bailey and Averie, who came to visit for a week. We did the Timp Cave tour, went boating, visited Park City, and had a blast! Glen really enjoyed his cousins who would read to him and play with him.

And we've been trying to enjoy being outside a little bit. My sister bought Glen this sweet wagon and a blow-up pool for his first birthday. Our buddy Gavin has also been the lucky beneficiary of these awesome gifts! :)

Since it's usually too hot to be outside for long, we've been having fun inside as well. Glen has found a new favorite hiding place in the kitchen. And, Glen and Gavin spent an afternoon discovering stickers. :)

That's about it--that we took pictures of anyway. It's been a FUN summer!

It's been a CRAZY few weeks. Lots of family. Lots of fun. Here's a summary, in pictures, of what's been going on...

First, David's little brother Mark came home from his mission. He's #10 out of 10 kids, so everyone came out to see him. There were big dinners, games, boating, volleyball, family pictures, and late nights of computer playing.

This was after we got family pictures done. The CD is in the mail, so I'll post the real pictures later. Glen got his stitches out right before we got the pictures taken, so his cut looked WAY better than I imagined.

Then, I flew to my sister's to run a half marathon with her near Bend, OR. We stayed a few days in Sun River, which is a beautiful resort community. We rode bikes, swam in the pool, and enjoyed the beautiful scenery.

And a few more bumps and bruises! Glen hit his head head on the banister and his lip on the fireplace. Now that he's walking, this is going to be the norm for a while I guess...

And finally, for the Fourth of July we had a BBQ at David's parent's house for dinner, and then everyone came over to our place to light fireworks. There were LOTS of them, and LOUD ones--and Glen slept soundly through it all in his crib. :)

The Story

So it's been a year, and I never posted "the" story--about Glen's birth. So, one year later, here's the very brief version (mostly just for posterity's sake)...

I worked all day Wednesday and just didn't feel good-for the very first time all pregnancy. As soon as I got home and laid on the couch at 6pm, I noticed that I was having pretty regular contractions, about 3-5 mins apart. David was out on the lake with his family. He walked in the door at about 7:30 and literally fell on the ground because he was so exhausted from boating. Then he looked and me and kind of jokingly asked if I was in labor, to which I answered "I think so." He got right up and took a shower, and then got down to business. With a stopwatch around his neck, he timed all my contractions and quickly plotted them in a graph in Excel. I love my husband!

By about 11:30pm the contractions were pretty intense and I was getting very sick, so we decided to head to the hospital. We got to AF hospital right at midnight, I puked twice in the elevator on our way up to the maternity floor, and then was checked-in. I was dilated to a 5. I spent some time in the tub, then got back into bed where my water broke. By 2:30 I was fully dilated and ready to push.

I think I should mention here that we were going natural. We had taken 10 weeks of classes in preparation to go natural. Anyhow, I started to push and push and push. I kept waiting for them to say he's getting closer, you're almost done, etc. But after almost 3 hours of hard pushing in every position imaginable, there was no progress--the kid just wasn't budging. He was face up, instead of the usual face down, but that typically doesn't stop a baby from coming--just makes it a little more difficult. So they called in a doctor (I was using a midwife) who said he could try to turn him face down, but due to the risks involved I would need to get an epidural in case they needed to do a quick c-section. By then it was obvious we needed a little assistance and I was done being in pain anyway, so I consented willingly. After an EXCELLENT epidural, the doctor thought he got him turned about 1/8 of the way, and had me push for a while. No progress. Then he gave me some pitocin and had me rest for an hour, in the hopes that perhaps stronger contractions might help get him out. So I waited and then pushed for another hour. Nothing.

So, at around 9am, after almost 5 hours of pushing, we decided to go with the c-section. The nice thing was that we had literally explored every option, so I felt completely comfortable and satisfied with a c-section. There was no other choice. Fortunately, Glen's heart rate was excellent throughout the whole labor, so we were never scared or anxious. The c-section went really well, and I was happy and laughing through the whole thing.

Glen was born on Thursday, June 19th at 10:36 am, and I was relieved to be done with it all. He didn't cry at all. The first things I noticed when I saw him were his white eyelashes and this tiny line of blond hair between his eyes. He weighed 7 lbs 13 oz and was 22 inches long. Normally c-section babies have cute round heads, but he had a major cone head from all those hours of trying to push him out. He was also pretty long for his size. His feet were big, but his heels were tiny and the bracelet kept slipping off his feet, so we had to keep socks on him to keep the IDs on. He nursed like a champ from the very start and was a good sleeper. He literally never cried, just fussed a little when he wanted something. He was an excellent baby!

So, although things didn't go as planned in labor, the end result was exactly what we wanted--a healthy, happy baby!

Friday, June 19th
Glen got his first haircut on his first birthday, and then we went out to dinner with our friend Michelle who shares his birthday.

Saturday, June 20th
Glen gets his first stitches. Slipped in the shower and hit the step. Eight stitches later he was up and around like nothing happened. What a tough kid!

Sunday, June 21st
Glen's first birthday party. Enchiladas and watermelon at Grandpa Schultz's house with the whole family. Then cake (which he just tried to push off the tray and wasn't interested in eating), ice cream and strawberries, and presents. He couldn't keep his hands off the $1 ball, despite all the other fancy toys. Gotta love boys!

Here's a little of what Glen is doing right now:

He's almost walking--taking 4-5 steps all the time. He can clap, wave, do "touchdown," shake his head no, sign "more," hold one finger up ("I'm number one!"), and say mmmmm when he eats. He still says mama, dada, baba, nana and gaga. Occasionally he says what sounds like no, but I'm not sure yet. He points to things he sees. He now cries whenever daddy leaves (I'm no longer the favorite). He eats everything, but loves cheese, chicken nuggets, applesauce, strawberries, and yogurt. He likes to turn light switches on and off, throw his bottle when he's done with it, gargle food and liquid in his mouth, and laughs when he toots. Most importantly, he makes his mom and dad SO happy. He's a great boy, and we're so excited to watch him grow!!

Last week I was catching up with someone I hadn't seen in a few years. They asked what I was up to these days and I said, being a mom and running. I chuckled to myself about that because it was true; if I'm not with Glen, I'm out on a run. But lately, I have been amazed at how much I LOVE both of those things.

Glen is just in this incredibly fun stage. He laughs, he explores, he jabbers, he loves me. Sometimes I just sit and watch him eat or play, and I can't explain how full my heart is. Being a mom is so great.

And I love running right now too. I ran my second marathon this weekend, and felt strong and tough. I pushed myself, and I felt proud as I was sprinting to the finish line. I've run over 500 miles since the beginning of the year. Wow. I'm getting faster, and that makes me want to run more.

This running mom is happy. That's all. :)

And while you're all here, I thought I might take a minute to share with you one of my favorite memories I have of my mom. There are A LOT I could choose from--she is a fantastic mother!! But one that stands out in particular today was from my freshman year in college. The summer before I left for BYU (I grew up in CA), my mom had this fabulous yellow, flowy sun dress that I LOVED to borrow. Once I got to Utah, I was talking to my mom on the phone and asked her if I could have that dress. She said that she loved the dress and would keep it. I wasn't bummed--it was a great dress, and it was hers. But wouldn't you know, about a week later I received a small package in the mail from my mom. And inside it was the yellow dress and a short note telling me she loved me. I'll never forget how loved I felt, and how wearing that dress made me happy. Everyone deserves a mom like that!

A Few Updates...

So here's a little of what we've been up to lately...

Glen is nine months now, plus a few weeks. He's still doing the army crawl thing, dragging his belly along the floor. I discovered that he'll crawl on his hands and knees if I take his clothes off, so he's been naked a lot more lately. I'm just getting tired of how filthy his clothes get being dragged along the floors all day--except now I'm having to clean up occasional puddles. It's a toss-up I guess...

He's pulling up on everything now. That means a lot more bumps and falls. He had a bruise across one cheek for a while and then a small cut and black eye just after that. Neither David or I have any idea how he got these injuries, but he's still alive so we haven't lost any sleep over it. This week I heard him crying in the back--he had crawled in to the bathroom, pulled up on the tub and managed to haul himself into the tub head first. I found him lying in the tub in the dark, more in shock than anything else. Now I know to close doors!

One of his favorite pastimes is pulling the clean laundry off the couch before I can get it folded. Thanks for the help Glen!

He also started rubbing his ear when he drinks his bottle. It's comforting to him I guess. He always does it--and I have to admit that it's pretty cute.

For whatever reason, he loves to chew on anything metal. Keys, buckles, clasps, etc. If he can get his hands on it, it goes into his mouth. Weird!

And he LOVES big people food. If anyone is eating anything in front of him, he'll crawl up to you and whine until you share. One of his favorites... spaghetti! Mmmmmm!

Today I ran the Provo City Half Marathon. This is my third half marathon, and by far my best! I finished in 1 hr 57 mins (9 min/mile pace). Now that's not fast in the competitive running world by any means, but it was quite the accomplishment for me. I ran my first half marathon at an 11:20 min/mile pace, and the second at a 10 min/mile pace. I've been training hard over the past few months to get faster, and set a goal to finish this race in two hours or less--so I'm stoked! Now lets just hope I'm not too sore tomorrow!

David has been keeping busy at work. His company is still doing very well, thankfully, and he loves what he's doing. He's on a city-league volleyball team right now, and will start a softball league with his co-workers at the end of the month. I can't wait--there's not much I love more in life than watching softball!!!

And the only other exciting news is that we got a new (to us) car last weekend. We decided that the Audi was a little to small for us, so we upgraded to something a little bigger. We got a great deal and hope to have this one around for a long time!!

The Hunger Games

So I just need to tell everyone about this book I finished last night, The Hunger Games. It's the best book I've read in a long time! I couldn't put it down, couldn't cook or clean or sleep until I finished it. Wow, just captivating!

So if you're in the mood for a fast-paced, action-packed, blood-pumping story give it a try. Just make sure you have a few days to do nothing but read! :)

Eight Months

Holy moly! Eight months! Wow, this kid is growing up fast! He's so much fun now. We love to play with him and just watch him figure things out. I finally feel like I'm getting the hang of being a mom, and life is good. Here are some pics of the last month...

The Perfect Storm

I haven't written in a while. We had a bit of a hairy week (well, it's been a about two weeks since then, but maybe we're all still recovering)! Glen got sick, really sick. First it was a fever and cough, which turned into an awful cough (the kind where they gag and throw up) and a cold. Runny nose, scratchy voice, more fevers, etc. Finally after a week of this I took him into the doctor, who told us that he had two really bad ear infections. So he went on antibiotics, and immediately came down with diarrhea--really bad--which gave him an awful diaper rash and was dehydrating him. And then, I happened to stick my finger in his mouth and happened to feel a sharp little edge of a tooth. Teething, on top of everything else! Poor baby!! It was quite the week, and I'll have to say that Glen was a trooper in spite of it all. Man, he's a good kid! Here's the only picture I took while he was sick--and he may not even look sick to you, but I can see it in his eyes. Sad. :(

His tooth was a surprise to me. I'd been checking his gums for months, literally, looking for them to be red and swollen. Never happened--the tooth just appeared. I'm hoping that means it's not as painful for him... We'll see!

6 months

Has it been 6 months already? Actually, it's almost 7 months now. Man, times flies... It's funny sometimes to think how drastically different my life is now, but it's been great! Here are his 6 month stats:

Height: 28.3 inches (91st percentile, up from 52nd)

Weight: 18 lbs 1.5 oz (43rd percentile, down from 64th)

Head: 17.7 inches (73rd percentile, up from 67th)

Here is what he's been up to... He can roll like a champ--both directions, over toys and pillows, under furniture, and across rooms. He likes to sleep on his left side a lot, and also likes to wake up 3-4 times a night for his beloved binkie. :( No more night feedings though! He LOVES to eat--rice cereal, oatmeal, sweet potatoes, squash, parsnips, avocados, peas, pears, applesauce, mango, prunes, peaches, and apricots. His favorite is bananas, and the only thing he hates is green beans. Oh, and as of this week, he has weened himself and is now only taking a bottle. (Mom had to come to terms with the sad parting, and is now trying to at least enjoy a little more freedom!)

Glen babbles "mama" now, mostly when he's upset. He loves staring at lights, looking in the mirror, and sitting on dad's shoulders. He now sits up like a big boy, and is probably only a few weeks away from crawling. He bangs anything that is hard against anything that will produce noise. I even found him reaching high up in his crib, over the bumper, in order to bang his binkie against the wood. :)

Glen has had 3 colds already, and likes the taste of medicine--but HATES his nose being sucked! He survived rolling off the couch. He's learned how to push away from mom when she's getting ready to put him to bed. He also loves to watch mom cook, and is fascinated with the blow dryer and doorbell. His hair is getting longer, so it's starting to lay down more. But, he still has his bald spot in back. Glen chews on everything, especially paper (when he can get his hands on it). He splashes like crazy in the bath, and makes his parents laugh every day!

I have a few goals for the year. Resolutions work for me (most of them at least)--I like to push myself and surprise other people. So, I just wanted everyone to know that I'm running another marathon. I figured that if I put it out there for everyone to know, that I'm more likely to actually get it done! I already have a training schedule, running buddy (thanks to my awesome friend Tara), and 2 new pairs of running shoes. My goal is the Ogden marathon in May, so wish us lots of luck! And please feel free to ask me about it whenever you see me, just to make sure I'm staying on track!!! :)

Christmas in California

David, Glen and I spent 10 awesome days in California with my family during Christmas break. It was honestly one of the best trips home that I've had in years! We relaxed and had fun and stayed up late and ate LOTS of good food.

We always have a Christmas Eve dinner with family in the area. Since most of them had never met Glen, he got passed around for pictures. Poor kid had just gotten up from a nap and was not quite ready for the photo shoot!

In my family, the presents don't go under the tree until the kids are in bed on Christmas Eve. Then Santa drops off his presents and fills stockings. So, it's so exciting to wake up Christmas morning and see all the presents!

One tradition at Christmas is putting together puzzles. We can usually get through 2 or 3 1000-piece puzzles during the break. However, we didn't finish a single one this year--although we started 4! Our bad luck started with this one:

We got everything put together except for the areas that were plain black. No shading, no patterns--just plain black. It got pretty tedious trying every single black piece one-by-one until we found one that fit. So, we packed it up and started puzzle #2. We couldn't even get the edges together on that one (it was a trapezoid instead of a rectangle), so it quickly went back into the box. Finally, we started two 500-piece puzzles the day before we left. They were looking promising and were well on their way to being completed, but we left before they were done. Sigh. Oh well--there's always next year!

For New Year's Eve we had an Italian dinner at our cousins' house and then had a Texas Hold 'Em tournament. David and I were both out in the first round, but it was fun.

First Christmas

Because Thanksgiving is the big Schultz holiday, we get to travel to my family's house every year. However, the Schultz family doesn't skip the holiday altogether--they just celebrate it with a nice dinner and presents, a little earlier than December 25th. This year, we had Christmas a week and a half early--on Monday Dec 15th. David got a cordless drill from his parents and a sweet dress shirt and tie from Ginger. I got some awesome winter running gear from my in-laws and the PERFECT mixing bowls from Kathy.

Glen had a good time--mostly just eating a bow. But we did try to get him to rip some paper and play with his gifts. He got lots of cool toys from everyone.

This is Picture tag. You're supposed to look in your fourth folder, fourth picture in that folder, and talk about it. I was really hoping the fourth folder would be the folder with all of Glen's pics, but no such luck. Instead, here you go...This is a blurry, dark picture from my very first triathlon: Women of Steel. It's a women-only race and was held in Bountiful, UT. It was in May 2007. This is me just before the race began, waiting to start the swim portion. I'm the one in a black sports bra, black shorts, yellow cap, and waving. There's another girl that fits that exact description, so I'll let you guess which one is me. :) For much better pictures of that event, you can go here to a past post dedicated to the race.

6 Quirks

Since I haven't posted anything in two months, I have about 85 tags to catch up on. I figured that, instead of posting them all at once, I'd spread them out every day or two. I also decided to include a random picture with each one--totally unrelated to the tag, but pictures make every post better! :) So here's the first one...

Six Quirks

1. I don't close doors or drawers. I have no problem with the car or house doors, but pretty much anything inside my house can be found with the door ajar. Kitchen cupboards, dresser drawers, hallway closet, etc. I don't know what it is, but I just never seem to push them all the way shut. David likes to joke around and ask if the cupboard fairy or drawer fairy has been through the house leaving them open. Nope, just his quirky wife!

2. I hate condiments. Hold the ketchup, mustard, mayo, and relish! I especially hate mayonnaise--the smell and sight literally make me gag. This means that I have to special order pretty much any sandwich or burger. That's fine in the US, but it was impossible for me to get a sandwich in Europe (they LOVE mayo!), and I had to order a sausage breakfast sandwich at all hours of the day when I was in China since there was no way I could order a Big Mac "dry" in Chinese. I do, however, love BBQ sauce and ranch dressing, so nothing I eat has to be bland or dry.

3. I check our bank accounts on-line everyday, multiple times a day. I not only check our balances, I go over every transaction and the amount. Part of this is for security reasons, but mostly it's because I'm a control freak when it comes to money. I like to know exactly what is being spent--which usually isn't much by David. Hooray for on-line banking!

4. I am addicted to chapstick. I literally have about 10 tubes laying around the house at any given time. A few in my purse, one on the nightstand, one on the coffee table, one in the nursery, one in the bathroom, one in the kitchen, a few in the diaper bag, and I can usually find a few tubes in random pockets of pants and sweatshirts. I put it on 30 times a day I'm sure--maybe more. I can't eat a meal without reapplying a few times. If I wake up at night, I reapply. It's the last thing I put on before working out, it's the first thing I check for when leaving the house. I can't live without it--I'd honestly go crazy I think. And, I only like plain chapstick--no flavored or scented stuff for me!!

5. I'm slightly obsessed with reality TV shows. It's all I watch! The Office is the ONLY non-reality show I watch. My favorite show is The Amazing Race (which David and I are going to apply to go on--and we will win!). I also love Jon & Kate Plus Eight, along with anything else on TLC or the Food Network. I have followed American Idol, American Gladiator (both new seasons), America's Toughest jobs, and plenty of other reality shows most people have never heard of. Maybe it's because I like to root for people? Who knows...

6. I always use my blinker in the car. It could be 5 am in the morning and I'm the only one on the street, and I'll still signal. It's 20% habit, and 100% because my BIGGEST pet peeve is when people don't use their blinker! It drives me insane--and so I can't not signal!

So there are a few things you might not have known about me. I left out the more embarrassing quirks! :) And here's the random picture for this post. This is one of my favorite shirts of Glen's. It's perfect for him: 100% Baby Boy! But I also love his eyelashes in this pic--he's got his dad's eyes for sure!

Home Sweet Home

This summer David and I decided to finally finish up some projects around the house, while we still had two incomes. :) This included adding storage shelves to the garage, installing ceiling fans in the bedrooms, finishing the nursery, adding faux shudders to the front windows, finishing our lawn (sprinklers, leveling, and sod), and putting in a fence. We honestly couldn't have done it without the help of my AMAZING dad or David's family. Thanks to everyone for making this happen!!! So, here are some pictures of the journey...

Catching Up

Yes, it's been a while. I hear that from everyone. However, my focus lately has been on getting more sleep. So, when I have a free evening, I spend it going to bed early. Sorry for the disappointment these past weeks, but I'm much better rested and ready to update! Here are some highlights...

First Road Trip -- Weekend in Vegas
David, Glen and I went to Las Vegas the weekend of October 12. David's brother Danny blessed his little girl Ella that weekend, so we headed down for that. Here's a pic of Schultz babies 39, 40, and 41. They were all born within 3 weeks of each other (Glen, Sophie, Ella).

Glen was a surprisingly great traveler. He slept almost the entire way down there, and about half of the way home. His usual sleeping schedule was thrown completely out the window, taking naps mostly in his carseat on the way to and from activities. But, he was a trooper and slept great at night in a pack-n-play. What a super boy! We didn't take many pics, but here's one we took at a buffet. David decided to prop him up against the seat to see if he could stand on his own. It worked for a few seconds...

Cornbellies
We spent an afternoon at Thanksgiving Point to celebrate David's niece's birthday. It was a BEAUTIFUL day! We walked around and commented mostly about how great that place would be if Glen was older. :)

But, David and I had a good time. We had a friendly tournament of tetherball--which I won! I did warn him before we started that I was the 5th grade Tetherball champion of my entire school. Guess I hadn't lost all my skills!

Four Month Check-up
Glen continues to be a great eater and weighed in at 15 lbs 6 oz at his 4 month check-up. The doctor gave us a green light to start trying some solid food. We started with rice cereal, which he LOVED. We filmed his first attempt, thinking there would be lots of funny faces and food spitting out of his mouth. However, he opened his mouth wide from the start and ate everything we made--no faces or wasted time. If we only knew this was how to get his tiny mouth to open WIDE!

Since then we've tried avocado, sweet potatoes, peas, applesauce, prunes and bananas. He likes everything--he just likes to eat! And he looks so big in his highchair.

Halloween
This Halloween, we went to a friend's house for a little party. The dads had a little foosball tournament--one-handed. It was pretty fun for all of us to watch.

Glen was a leopard, David used our Nudist sign from last year, and I just wore a festive spider headband. Here is the only picture we took of all three of us that night.
But I had fun dressing Glen up all day and taking pics of him. Poor kid! :)

And, we held the 5th annual Schultz Family Pumpkin Carving Party again. It's now our tradition to carve an "S" pumpkin, which David spent an INSANE amount of time making perfect. But we all had a great time!! The night totaled 27 people and 16 pumpkins.

Big Boy!
Glen has REALLY grown up these past few weeks. He's getting so fun--laughing like crazy and playing with us. He can roll over like a champ and is SOO close to sitting up all on his own. He's sleeping better at night and taking much longer naps during the day. His 30 minute catnaps have lengthened to 1-2 hours now... hooray!!! His hair is getting longer and wavier by the second--and sticks straight up. We love it though and can't wait to see how curly it might get!

Caterpillar

Glen has recently become obsessed with putting everything within reach into his mouth. Yesterday, his caterpillar became a sad victim of this new pastime. The kid is intense! :)

12 weeks

Today Glen is 12 weeks old. He's sweet and wonderful and absolutely handsome. I love being his mom, all day everyday!

Today was the day I was scheduled to go back to work, but I'm so blessed to be able to stay home with my baby boy! I cleaned out my desk, copied the files I needed from my work computer, and turned in my badge. It's official, I'm now a stay at home mom. And I couldn't feel better about it.

I loved working--loved being so good at what I did. I enjoyed feeling successful and bringing home a paycheck every two weeks. But I just can't imagine paying someone else to watch Glen, especially since that's what I really want to do. Home is where I need to be right now.

So here's to a great husband who left his job of eight years at Nuskin in order to make more money so that I can stay home! He'd work 10 jobs if he needed to, because he knows how important it is for me to be here. I just can't say how blessed I feel right now!

Glen's Chair

This is a picture of Baby Glen in Grandpa Glen's chair. The pink velvety recliner is one of our favorite hand-me-downs from David's Grandpa Schultz, who Glen is named after. Hopefully it'll still be around by the time Glen can really fit into it...

Glen finally fits into his Schultz shirt. It's a 3-6 month shirt, and he's not yet even 3 months but it fits like a glove. That means it's not going to fit for long--but he sure is handsome in it now! :)

The Last 1

I just changed Glen's diaper. It was the last size 1 diaper we have. Sadly, the seemingly HUGE size 2 diapers fit much better. That just means that my little boy is not so little anymore. :(

However, there is a silver lining to this aging cloud--SLEEP! Last night Glen slept nine hours straight (from 7pm to 4am), then ate and went right back down until 8:30 this morning. That meant that mom got 8 hours of sleep last night--broken up in the middle, but still eight total hours!

Two Months

Yesterday was Glen's 2 month check-up. When I brought him in the exam room, the nurse asked how old he was. When I told her two months, she said, "Oh, he's big." Nice! He weighed 12lbs 6oz and was 24 inches long. That puts him in the 80th percentile for weight and height. He's our little weed. :)

I didn't do a photo shoot for his 2 month b-day, but here are some of my favorite recent pics of our handsome little man:

Blessing Day

I'm a few weeks late, but here are finally pictures from Glen's blessing day. David had some extra family in town the first weekend in August, so August 3rd was the big day. David's sister was also blessing their daughter Sophie, so we had one crazy day! First, Glen was blessed by David at our church at 9 am. After that, we went to his parent's house for a big, combined Kent/Schultz/Johnson bash. It was a super yummy nacho bar, with all the fixings. We took some pictures (in the nice HOT sun) and then went to Sophie's blessing at 1pm. It was an awesome day--with lots of family and happiness!

This is my family--or at least the few that were able to make it. My mom Marcia, Bailey & Taryn (nieces), and my dad Howard. Glen did NOT love the sun! :)

And here's the Schultz clan--or at least the majority of them. The crazy thing is that there are 10 people missing... from his immediate family and their kids, alone. Big families are so great!

That's right--four babies in 3.5 months. These are Schultz #'s 38, 39, 40 and 41 (grandkid #'s 20, 21, 22 and 23)! I love looking at the size difference of them all--Glen fits so nicely right in the middle. And the best part of it all--there's still one more on the way this year. Baby girl Isbell is due in December. :)

Bumbo

This weekend, we tried out Glen's Bumbo for the first time. He's a little young for it yet, but he did okay. He's still got a bit of a bobble head, so he only lasted about 2 minutes before he got tired and started to fuss. But, he looked so cute and small in it...

Fuzzy Head

I love it after Glen gets a bath. Partly because he smells so good, but mostly because his hair is so fluffy right after. He doesn't have a lot of hair, but it's so soft. I tried to get some shots of his fuzzy head the other day. It's not quite the same as seeing him in person, but you get the point...

2 Week Stats

We have a great baby on our hands! He took a little extra work getting into this world, but has made up for it ever since. At his two week check-up, Glen was a champion! He put up with the heel prick without a peep, and even braved his way through his Hep B shot with only about 10 seconds of crying. To this today, that's the most I've ever heard out of this little man!

As for growth, he's doing great! He was 7 lbs 13 oz at birth, and was 8 lbs 10 oz at his appointment. That put him in the 46 percentile for weight. His height at 2 weeks was 21.75 inches. That means he's shrunk since he was born (he was 22 inches at birth). Actually, it just attests to how big of a cone head he had when he was born--which tells a lot about how hard I tried to push him out! :) Even with the reduction in length, he's still in the 85 percentile for length. We have one long and skinny boy on our hands--just like his dad!

Sleep

For the first two weeks after coming home from the hospital, Glen slept in a bassinet in our bedroom. It was easier for me with my incision and all to not have to get out of bed all the time. However, now that I'm feeling and moving lots better, it was time for Glen to go to his room.

He's been a good sleeper so far. I've had a few 5 and 6 hours stretches, and he's never been up more frequently than every 3 hours. I was worried that changing locations would break his sleeping stride, but he's spent the last two nights in his crib and so far has slept just as good as before.

It's just cute how little he looks in his big crib!
